One way to deconstruct the Manic Pixie Dream Girl (see also Wikipedia): the Manic Pixie Prostitute (more-or-less SFW). Or maybe I mean "satirize." Either way.

Via Metafilter, where there's also good discussion in the comments. (Yes, this sometimes happens on the Internets.)

Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it
No one mentions Betty Blue in the comments. Or any of the prototypes in older films (Bringing Up Baby et al.).

who needs one-stop shopping?
For Bringing Up Baby and Breakfast at Tiffany's, you have to go to Wikipedia.

Really enjoyed that. Now I'm wondering whether this trope really appears first with the screwball comedy. From Henry Tilney's perspective, perhaps Catherine Morland is a MPDG? But I guess MPDGs only work where the protagonist is male, and everything revolves around him.

A strong connotation of the concept is that the MPDG's only narrative function relates to the male protagonist's character arc. If it's about her, then it's using some of the character traits to another purpose.

The Heartwarming Orphan as plot device is indeed old, and may have some genre relationship.

(I confess I remember very, very little of SM from high school -- it stuffed it into the same mental box as Ethan Frome and padlocked hard.)
